Evolution of an Allotment

By Dave Fisher

We don’t all manage to acquire a pristine allotment and I thought that you might like to see what can be done with one that's overgrown. This is what we found on plot 29.

Initial thoughts were good – the weeds appeared to be annuals but, alas, later proved to be a mix of annuals, creeping buttercup, couch grass, dandelions and bindweed!

Slowly, but surely, we started to remove the weeds, add edging and clear the ground.

Gradually, the earth returned to something that would grow vegetables.

Rubbish cleared from the rear and a new ‘barrier’ comprising old pallets built to separate the plot from the trees. Spuds in.

Finally, onions in and polytunnel built for tomatoes, chillies and cucumbers.
